On the seventh “Jazz in the Sky” event the weather was finally dreary, and, for the first time, the event was held indoors. The Hendrik Meurkens Samba Jazz Quartet performed in the large-windowed Terrace in the Sky, overlooking the New York, New Jersey, and beyond skyline, in rain and wind. The music was elegant and energizing, with Hendrik on both vibes and harmonica, Helio on piano, Gustavo on electric bass, and Adriano on drums and exotic percussion. The original compositions and renowned Brazilian ballads above filled both restaurants with resonant Rio rhythms. There were generous solos and varying ensemble pieces, and the band adjusted the volume to fit the space, more acoustically intimate.
The “Jazz in the Sky” indoor bar created the same exotic drinks as found in the outdoor bar, and I’m totally pleased with Joe’s grapefruit cosmos. “Jazz in the Sky” will once again be steaming on September 26, 2006, with the Dave Valentin (flute)-Bill O’Connell (piano)Latin Jazz Trio with Richie Flores on congas. Call Terrace in the Sky at 212.666.9490 to reserve a good seat or table. You can also sit at the outdoor, exotic bar. “Jazz in the Sky” is presented rain or shine (with an elegant indoor space, if necessary). Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
