It was a pleasure to stop by Matts Grill this afternoon for brunch, and to have the pleasant surprise of the Sarah Hayes Jazz Quartet entertaining the guests with rapturous standards. Some of the tunes I caught, while dining on a bacon and cheddar omelet and a glass of crisp Chardonnay, were “Cheek to Cheek”, “Embraceable You”, “Route 66”, “In the Still of the Night”, “Autumn in New York”, and “On the Street Where You Live”. Where else could you dine on hot brunch and wine at the bar, with New York Marathoners strolling by the window, while catching Sunday football on wide-screen TV, as you enjoy vibrant vocal ballads from a seasoned band? Ms. Hayes sings with rich, tonal clarity and scintillating personality. She brings gesture and warmth to her poignant and romantic lyrics. Her versatility was notable, with jumping rhythmics one moment and languid resonance the next.

Jacob Melchior, on drums, as well, was piping hot in riffs, yet gentle on brushes to enhance the timbre of the tantalizing songs. Roy Dunlop brought an electric piano, and he made the most of some generously rambunctious riffs. Neal Caine, on bass, provided zest and earthiness to the lively brunch sets. Matts Grill is family-owned and operated since 1995, and you can call ahead to see when they’re showcasing jazz with brunch or dinner. Be sure to say hello to Dave, the jovial bartender.
