(See an Introductory Testimonial about Russian Samovar.)

Samovar, on West 52nd Street, a grand, yet casual, renowned, yet serendipitous Russian restaurant, happens to be next door to the Neil Simon Theatre, where "Angels in America", an over-seven hour play, is in two-part performances. During the break between "Millennium Approaches" and "Perestroika", I slipped into Samovar for Hibiscus Herbal Tea with Berries, Homemade Chicken Soup with Chicken Meatballs, called Soup with Frikadelka, and Spinach Pirozhok. Samovar has a fantastic wine, cocktail, liqueur, and vodka selection, but I had almost four more hours of theater ahead of me. My banquette, in red leather cushioned seating (see photos in the above linked introductory testimonial), was adjacent to Nini, the Wednesday night pianist. Her renditions of Russian, American, and French ballads, as well as Chopin works, were transporting amd highly professional.

When you are in the theater district, after a matinee, or before or after an evening performance, your dinner destination should be Samovar, for the finest Russian cuisine and crooning pianists. The d├ęcor is richly evocative of old world Moscow and St. Petersburg, and the bar is lively till 2 AM weekdays and 4 AM weekends! Samovar is your late night or between matinee and evening theater destination for caviar, borscht, vodka, blini, and Chopin. Upstairs at Samovar is a private party room, private dining room, additional piano bar, and gorgeous performance space. And, Baryshnikov and The Rat Pack are previous owners of the space. Stop by and visit Samovar. Tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
