The recently opened Lamano, owned and operated by Jorge Guzmán and his group, including Alejandro Cuchara & Israel Cantú, founding partners of The People Behind, along with Chef Mario Hernandez and Manager, Ricardo Palafox, is a vibrant new Chelsea restaurant for contemporary Spanish tapas, wine, and cocktails. Located at West 20th Street and Eighth Avenue, Lamano is close to the High Line park and walkways, the Chelsea art galleries, ballroom dance studios, the Joyce Theater for modern dance and ballet, Atlantic Theater Company, and the headquarters of American Ballet Theatre and its Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School for ballet. Lamano is in the heart of Chelsea, where actors, musicians, dancers, choreographers, stage technicians, designers, and visual artists make their homes.

The term “Lamano” means made by hand, and the partners’ birthdays are annotated on the “hand” logo. Jorge Guzmán and his team have created a vibrant, intimate space, with small communal tables and a bar, facing the open kitchen. Immediately next door to Lamano is its sister restaurant for Mexican street cuisine, Temerario. Chef Mario Hernandez shares his time between both restaurants through an adjoining pathway, and his culinary talents are extraordinary. Along the walls, one can find the finest Spanish and Argentinean wines, and the premium bar is stocked for unique, tempting cocktails.

Lamano is open from 4 PM to 11 PM for Tapas and Dinner, Monday through Thursday, and 4 PM to 12 AM, Friday and Saturday. Happy Hour is 4 PM to 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with Weekend Brunch 11 AM to 3:30 PM. The inviting menus, titled in Spanish, are authentic to the cuisine of Spain. The Montaditos, or little sandwiches, include one with sausage, apples, and salsa verde, while the Pintxos, or small snacks, include one with caramelized onions, Idiazabal cheese, garlic chips, and Riesling. One of the tapas, called Navajas, is prepared with Razor clams, olive oil, dried olives, vanilla, and garbanzo (chickpea), while Patatas Bravas are crispy potatoes with spice salsa brava, and Coca is Catalan flatbread with vidalia onion, piquillo peppers, anchovies, and manchego cheese. Queso y Embutidos, or cheese and cured dry sausages, include Chorizo Picante, served with house bread and piquillo onion jam, as well as a specialty, Fermin Iberico Ham, aged 36 months. The Brunch menu tapas are similar, while the full plates include Omelette, with manchego cheese, grilled asparagus, patatas bravas, and onions, as well as Torrijas, with challah bread, citrus custard, and cherry sabayon.

On the expansive Lamano Red Wine list, you’ll find bottles of Xenys, Gran Vinaio, Marques de Vitorio, and Puro Vicio, all from Spain. White Wines by the bottle include Vecrima and Faustino Rivero, also from Spain, and Cavas include Marrugat Brut. Most wines can also be ordered by the glass. Rosé, Cider, Mineral Water, and Beer are also generously listed on the menus, and Cocktails include Sangria, with house red wine, orange curaçao, citrus, cane syrup, and ginger ale, as well as Garibaldi, with Campari and fresh orange juice. Special Brunch Cocktails include Sangria, Lamano Mimosa, with fresh orange juice, sherry, and Cava (Spanish sparkling wine). Stop by Lamano for tapas, drinks, brunch, or a fantastic shared dinner with friends, and, in the warmer months, you can enjoy sidewalk seating on West 20th Street. Be sure to tell them you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com.
