The most inviting and charming restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen for fine Indian cuisine is India Kitchen on Ninth Avenue, between 37th and 38th Streets. Proprietors, Amarjit S. Rai and Mohan Ahluwalia, Executive Chef, Rajinder Saini, and Chef, Harbhjan Saini are all experienced in the finest cooking styles and techniques of regional Indian cuisine. The intimately designed space has framed India travel photographs and art décor, with very comfortable and versatile seating. India Kitchen can be your private party destination for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, night before weddings, or just a private celebration for yourself as a reward for hard work and accomplishments. Your business lunch meetings at India Kitchen will impress. You can also order takeout or stop by for Lunch Box To-Go selections, choosing from Vegetarian, Chicken, Lamb, or Tandoori (clay oven). The Catering Menu possibilities, for your home, your office, or private party space, can focus on Vegetarian, Lamb, Chicken, Drinks, Desserts, and Fresh Baked Breads, and you can also choose Appetizers, Soups, and Side Dishes.

The India Kitchen expansive menu encompasses Vegetarian Appetizers like Chili Paneer, with cubes of cottage cheese sautéed in fresh ginger, garlic paste, green and red peppers, finished in spicy tomato sauce. Fish Amritsari is a Non-Vegetarian Appetizer, with an herb-marinated, fried filet of fresh fish. Lentil Soup and Tomato Soup, both with mild herbs, are always available. Vegetable Entrées include my favorite, Yellow Daal Tarka, with yellow lentils cooked in the chef’s choice spices, with Basmati Rice, as well as Aloo Gobi, cauliflower and potatoes simmered in spices. Punjabi, Clay Oven dishes include Chicken Seekh Kabab, with minced chicken, chopped onions, garlic, and herbs, rolled over a skewer and slow cooked in the clay oven, and Tandoori Shrimp, with shrimp marinated in lemon and herbs, grilled in the clay oven. India Kitchen Curries for Poultry include Chicken Shahi Korma, with chicken cooked with dried fruits in creamy sauce with mild herbs, and Achari Chicken Masala, with chicken marinated in pickle masala, finished with the chef’s herbs.

Lamb dishes include Lamb Keema Matar, with ground lamb cooked with green peas and chef’s herbs, and Lamb Saag, with lamb and spinach cooked in mild herbs. India Kitchen’s Seafood includes Shrimp Vindaloo, with shrimp soaked overnight in spicy Goan masala, simmered over a low fire, and Fish Curry, with filet of fish cooked in spices and herbs. Biryanis include Goat Biryani, with fresh goat and rice with herbs, as well as Shrimp Biryani, with peeled shrimps and saffron basmati simmered with spices. Side Dishes include Mango Chutney and Mixed Pickles, and Breads from the Tandoor include my favorite, Cheese & Spinach Naan, stuffed with spinach and cheese, as well as Kabuli Naan, baked with dried fruits. India Kitchen Drinks include your choice of Lassi, mango, sweet, or jeera, and the Chef’s special blend of Jal Jeera. Gulab Jamun, deep friend cheese dumplings, dipped in honey and cardamom, is one of the featured house desserts.

Stop by India Kitchen, on your way to or from a Broadway or Off-Broadway show, before or after visiting the High Line, walking to or from your work, or driving to or from the Lincoln Tunnel. Tell them you saw them on!
