Indigo Indian Bistro, on Columbus Avenue at 73rd Street, just a few blocks from Lincoln Center theaters and ballet, Fordham Law School, Juilliard, the West Side movie theaters, Upper West Side shopping, and Central Park, is a delightful, intimate restaurant. Their cuisine, traditional Indian, with Bollywood film tracks wafting through the cozy space, will transport you well beyond the busy sidewalks. On my recent, late lunch visit, Kano, Manager, was keenly attentive to my choice of Tandoori Shrimp, marinated and grilled, served with Mango Chutney, as well as Tamarind and Mint Sauces, plus fresh-cooked, hot Chili Sauce, Basmati Rice, and Hot Onion Stuffed Naan. This was a sizable lunch, so I skipped dessert. My Chardonnay was crisp and chilled.

Indigo, owned by the same family that owns Basera, in Hell's Kitchen, also serves a streamlined lunch special for only $9.95, from 12 noon to 3:00 PM, including rice, Naan bread, and any chicken, lamb, or vegetable entrée from the menu! Indigo has dozens of delicious options, with appetizers like Seekh Kebab (minced lamb sausages), Murg Malai Kebab (creamy grilled chicken breast), and Chaat Papri (whole wheat crisps and spiced yogurt). Hot breads include Naan (plain or stuffed with onion or chicken), Paratha (with spinach, mint, potato), and Roti (whole wheat). Biryani options with rice include Shrimp, Saffron Chicken, and Vegetable.

Seafood Specialties include Fish Curry (with salmon cooked in pepper-tomato sauce), Shrimp Jalferezi (cooked with fresh vegetables), and Shrimp Saag (baby shrimps and spinach). For vegetarians and vegetable lovers, Indigo features an expansive array of dishes, such as Malai Kofta (Indian cheese dumplings), Paneer Makhani (cubes of Indian cheese in tomato sauce), and Yellow Dal (lentils). Chicken Specialties include Chicken Tikka Masala (with tomato fenugreek sauce) and Mango Chicken. Lamb and Beef Specialties have options like Lamb Korma (cooked in saffron almond sauce). Indigo prides itself on its grilled Tandoori Specialties, including a Mixed Grill.

For dessert you might like Gulab Jamun (Indian cheese balls in honey) or Kulfi (homemade pistachio almond ice cream). Indigo serves wine and beer by the glass, plus Lassi (a non-fat yogurt beverage). Stop by Indigo Indian Bistro, for dinner before or after a concert, ballet, or movie, and mention you saw them on RobertaOnTheArts.com for a complimentary glass of wine or a beer!
