The New York Botanical Garden is presenting The Orchid Show: On Broadway, its ninth themed orchid show, now an annual tradition. Amidst the tropical plant exhibits in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, sumptuous orchids in bud and full bloom are exhibited in solo plantings, flowing arrangements in waterfalls of color, and exquisite orchid-strewn set designs by none other than Tony award-winner, Scott Pask. I was so enchanted, in my exploration of this year’s orchid extravaganza, that I felt like humming the show tunes that emanated throughout the Conservatory, an entertaining treat. Broadway image-maker, Drew Hodges, collaborated with the Garden’s planning and curatorial team, as well as with Mr. Pask, to showcase the orchids (5,000 specimens and 300 varieties) as stars and architecture. On entering the exhibit, an arch with symmetrical arrangements of orchids, pink and gold curtain cords, and a stage chorus of bursting orchids, all in quintessential glitz, greet the visitor and beckon to the winding walkways.

As I wandered, ever so slowly, not to miss this season’s special effects, I imagined I was ticket in-hand, strolling into the New Amsterdam Theatre’s ornate promenade, or under the proscenium arch and curtain of the Walter Kerr Theatre, or under the great chandelier of the Eltinge 42nd Street Theatre. The Botanical Garden also created tiered audiences of fragrant orchids: orchestra, mezzanine, and so on. Each orchid is uniquely the finest quality specimen flown in, like a diva, and the juxtaposition of these thousands of orchids with the Haupt Conservatory’s gardenias, cacti, languorous plants, exotic fruit, and tall tropical trees, was astounding and sensational.

Special events are happening, throughout the Garden, some expanding on the Broadway theme, such as Weekend Broadway Cabaret, in the Mertz Library’s Orchid Rotunda and “Hirschfeld’s Broadway Scrapbook” in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library’s William D. Rondina and Giovanni Foroni LoFaro Gallery. Other Orchid Show-related events include Orchid Evenings, with a “performance” of orchids and cocktails by the glass, followed by dinner at the Garden’s partner restaurants, kids’ programs, called “Spring Break” (April 19-25), Tuesday Talks, with a biological introduction to the orchids, led by Garden Docents, Guided Tours of The Orchid Show, and, of course, an expansive choice of orchids to take home, at Shop in the Garden.

I spent a full day at The Orchid Show, choosing my date for almost sunny weather, not an easy feat these past few months. This planning paid off with a multitude of “signs of spring”. Bulbs were sprouting greenery through dry winter twigs, and trees were budding in shades of grey, green, and red. My luckiest moment was catching a puffed up red robin, who flew onto bare branches to find shelter from the wind. Early spring plants, wild and not so wild, were peeping through cold soil, and squirrels bounded about, enjoying elusive sun. The lovely walk to the Mertz Library took me past picturesque views of hills and fanciful trees, their landscape design so apparent without the presence of foliage. At Mertz Library, I was riveted to Hirschfeld’s sketches of the Gershwin Brothers, Oscar and Hammerstein, Barbara Streisand, numerous Broadway casts, many composers and lyricists, and original Window Cards. On another floor, there was an exhibit called “Plants and Fungi: Ten Research Stories”, and, on entering and leaving Mertz Library, one passes through the Orchid Rotunda, with luscious orchids growing behind glass.

My trips to the Garden always include late lunch at the Garden Café, and today I enjoyed a vegetarian wrap and a glass of chardonnay. At the Shop in the Garden, visitors can find multiple varieties of orchid plants to take home and gaze upon, as well as orchid-related jewelry, guest napkins, colorful pottery, designer tableware, and a library of books on orchid care and orchid photography. Shop in the Garden always has racks of organic vegetable seeds, unusual flowers seeds, top quality garden tools, children’s toys and books, Botanical Garden embossed hats and shirts, and gourmet sauces, teas, honeys, spices, and soaps. Fragrant perfumes, bath gels, draw-liners, and sachets transport the visitor right back to the gardens. A few of the upcoming exhibits, which I’m eagerly anticipating, are the Azalea Garden Grand Opening (May), with old-fashioned garden parties and photography and art demonstrations, the Antique Garden Furniture Show and Sale (April 29-May 1), and “Spanish Paradise: Gardens of the Alhambra” (May 21-August 21), with Flamenco Among the Flowers, Food and Culture of the Alhambra, and My Lorca Poetry Series.

Do not miss the New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Show: On Broadway, running through April 25, 2011. Wear comfortable shoes, light, layered clothing, and be sure to bring your camera.
