See a Review of the Music Hall's Christmas Spectacular

Taking a Stage Door Tour of Radio City Music Hall, with a nine-year old Rockette fan, was a huge delight. Camille, and her mother Madeline, joined me to see the dressing rooms, history, stage technology, costumes, statues, gift shop, a real phone booth, fancy ladies and menís room murals, and a real live Rockette. Our guide, who had dozens of anecdotes a minute, took us on Donald Deskeyís (Radio City interior designer) original winding staircases, pointed out refurbished carpeting and seats, and Art Deco paintings and sculptures. He spoke about the early days, in the 1930ís to 1950ís, when movies were shown at Radio City, introduced by Rockettes, with live orchestral music. But, today, a rock band was warming up, in a hazy white spotlight, and the drums were quite a contrast to the Christmas shows that Camille is used to seeing in this magnificent venue.

We passed through the Rockettes historical hallway, and we even met Lisa, a Rockette in full regalia. Lisa told us about the rigors of daily rehearsals, annual tryouts, and the multiple Christmas shows, morning till night. I personally love going to Radio City and have reviewed several Christmas Spectaculars, The Tony Awards, and Aznavour, all on this grand stage, framed by an expansive archway. Our guide brought us to the Roxy Suite, named for Samuel Roxy Rothafel, who helped found Radio City with John. D. Rockefeller, Jr. and David Sarnoff. The Roxy Suite showcases iconic photos, such as Sinatra and The Rockettes. Radio City was first a radio station, Radio Corporation of America, and Radio City Music Hall was opened in December, 1932, with a stage show, starring Ray Bolger, Doc Rockwell, and Martha Graham. In 1933, the Music Hall shifted to a feature film-stage show format, then popular at the Roxy Theatre. Radio City has almost 6,000 seats, and its interior structure resembles that of a setting sun and a cruise ship.
