The Alhambra is a legendary Islamic fortress and palace in Grenada, Spain. The 13th and 14th century landscape and architecture of the Alhambra has been invoked in a 15,000 square foot display in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory at The New York Botanical Garden. Penelope Hobhouse, a historian, writer, and designer, has carefully curated this expansive display with fragrance, color, and sumptuous floral contrasts. Flowers and plants mix and merge in unique patterns and textures. The Haupt Conservatory, with its permanent plantings, creates a rare showcase, where significant floral exhibits, such as Spanish Paradise, can position orchids near cacti and roses near lemon trees. Ms. Hobhouseís folios, prints, watercolors, and photos can be seen in the Mertz Libraryís William D. Rondina and Giovanni LoFaro Gallery. Among the Gardenís special programs, in connection with Spanish Paradise, are a Poetry Walk, with poems by Garcia Lorca, weekend flamenco concerts, home gardening demonstrations, Alhambra food tastings, Spanish guitar nights, and more.

My day consisted of two gorgeous walks, before and after the Alhambra visit in the Conservatory. On the first walk, with an immediate wave of relief to be out of the city and in this natural oasis, I looked for robins, chipmunks, and squirrels. Exploring the Perennial and Herb Gardens, it was obvious that late spring had arrived, with poppies, irises, and sculptured greenery. Herbs were sprouting, ready for the kitchen. On the walkway toward the Alhambra exhibit, pink, white, and red peonies were bursting into bloom. Also, on this first walk, I noticed that the trees had full, darkening green foliage, and I stopped by the Shop in the Garden to photo all their lovely gifts with Alhambra related photos, recipes, and motifs. Inside the Conservatory, the tropical aromas of citrus, roses, orchids, and gardenias mixed in such a way to transport the visitor to a faraway land. Spanish guitar wafted everywhere. The fountains were surrounded in lush, floral decorative design.

The second walk led me through the forest restoration, pond, waterfall, and the new 11-acre Azalea Garden, which had just recently reached its prime. Luckily, many of the red, orange, and pink azaleas were still shining brightly. My trips to the Garden always include late lunch at the Garden Cafť, and today I enjoyed a vegetarian wrap and a glass of chardonnay. At Shop in the Garden, visitors can find multiple varieties of easy to care for exotic plants to take home and gaze upon, as well as Alhambra-related jewelry, guest napkins, colorful pottery, designer tableware, and a library of books on the architecture of Spanish Paradise gardens and tropical fruits. Shop in the Garden always has racks of organic vegetable seeds, unusual flowers seeds, top quality garden tools, childrenís toys and books, Botanical Garden embossed hats and shirts, and gourmet sauces, teas, honeys, spices, and soaps. Fragrant perfumes, bath gels, draw-liners, and sachets carry the visitor right back to the gardens. A few of the upcoming exhibits, which Iím eagerly anticipating, are the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden in June-July and the Water Lily Concerts in August.

Do not miss the New York Botanical Gardenís Spanish Paradise: Gardens of the Alhambra, running through August 21, 2011. Wear comfortable shoes, light, layered clothing, and be sure to bring your camera.
