This is not a detailed and technically researched documentary, but, rather, a mental and visual reflection of a wonderful trip.

There is no better way to spend a summer Holiday than riding on the Shearwater, an 82’, 1920’s era yacht, from the World Financial Center to the Statue of Liberty and back, passing New York’s bright, then dimming skyline, as day turns night and sunlight turns to moonlight. I rode the Shearwater today for two back-to-back excursions, 4:00-6:00 PM and then 7:00-9:00 PM, taking a break to visit a bistro on the water for a quesadilla and wine. Our Captain was David, for both sails, and he masterfully led this river tour, giving instruction to the crew for the shifting and hoisting of the massive sails. The river was smooth and silent, except for the chiming of the buoys.

On the late afternoon sail, it was good to finally meet Claire, from suburban Paris, who today was the bar server. You can order picnics, wine, and catered parties through the friendly Shearwater staff, and they also take requests for longer, private sails and overnight excursions.
