(See Martha Graham Dance Company Interviews and Reviews)

I caught up with Virginie Mécène, Artistic Director of Graham II and Director of the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, at Seven Bar and Grill on 7th Avenue between 29th and 30th Streets.  Virginie was also a Principal dancer of the Martha Graham Dance Company. I have known Virginie for several years, as I have followed the events of the impassioned and exemplary Martha Graham Dance Company for decades. We had a delightful lunch conversation, and Virginie bubbled with enthusiasm about her extraordinary career as a dancer with the company and as Director, now, of the youthful Graham II, as well as leader of the School.

The following description of Graham II, forwarded by Virginie, originates on the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance Website:

Graham II, formerly named The Martha Graham Ensemble, was founded in 1983 by Yuriko at the request of Martha Graham. Today, under the direction of Virginie Mécène since 2007, it continues its mission to bring fresh energy, passion and forward vision to the brilliant tradition of Martha Graham. As the New York Times noted, "...these fresh young performers bring to this distinctive style a welcome boldness and clarity."

Composed of up to 12 dancers, Graham II is the performing group of the Martha Graham School. The dancers have been selected from among the hundreds of students from across the world studying at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance. Members are chosen by audition and are funded by scholarships. While a member of Graham II, dancers may be given the opportunity to apprentice with the Martha Graham Dance Company.

The dance troupe performs Martha Graham's repertory and the works of others choreographers and is highly committed to its arts outreach programs which are conducted all year long throughout the public school system in all five boroughs of New York.

Virginie also forwarded her BIO:

Virginie Mécène, former Principal Dancer of the Martha Graham Dance Company, with which she toured around the world form 1994 to 2006, is presently the Director of the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance and the Artistic Director of Graham II. She is a guest teacher at the Ailey School and was a Lecturer at Barnard College, NY.

She has set Graham repertory on Universities and Dance Companies in the U.S. and was published in the French magazine Danser, where her article about the Martha Graham technique was featured.

She choreographed for the Joffrey Midwest Workshop, Michigan, L'Opéra-théâtre de Metz, France, the Singapore Dance Ensemble, Singapore, the EFSD, LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and performing Arts, the Brooklyn College, Graham II, and others.

We dined lightly today, both beginning with Summer Plum Tomato Gazpacho with Cucumber Lime Relish and Sparkling Water with Lime. Virginie also dined on Poached Pear & Roquefort Salad, with Frisée, Spoon Spinach, Walnut Crumbs, Marinated Shallots, and Walnut Vinaigrette, while I chose Salmon & Yellow Fin Tuna Tartar, with Baby Mache and Hand Torn Pepper Crackers.

Seven Bar and Grill is located very close to Broadway shows, Madison Square Garden, The Javits Center, and the Fashion and Fur Districts.
