Caelum Gallery has been operating in Chelsea for a decade and before that for two years in Soho. The gallery specializes in contemporary Japanese art, but it also has many shows by artists from other countries as well as by American artists. The work that is shown is highly eclectic, appealing to a broad spectrum of tastes, from cutting edge to traditional. (Press Notes)
Misuzu Takemoto, Co-Director of Caelum Gallery, hosted an Opening Reception for four fascinating artists, Holly Adams, Leo Komuro, Yoshiko Makita, and Kyoko Machii, all with unique artistic styles. Holly exhibited her series of Mermaids, each painted for a member of her family – daughter and grandchild, daughter-in-law-to-be, sister, sister-in-law, and herself. Each Mermaid has individual colors and ornamentations. Leo Komuro paints digitally, using the motif of the body, while Yoshiko Makita and Kyoko Machii paint still life, landscapes, and scenery of Japan.
The artists were available for questions and photographs, and Caelum Gallery is one to watch, for its warm and inviting receptions, as well as its artistic diversity and dynamic. I took the photos of artworks below, but it would be wise to visit Caelum Gallery before this exhibit closes on March 24, 2007.
