Barbara Fasano celebrates Harold Arlen’s mellow, mellifluous, and romantic ballads, accompanied by piano, bass, drums, percussion, guitar, saxes, and flugelhorn. This seasoned singer’s talent stands alone, and she is best showcased solo, accompanied by one or two instruments, each of which takes sensational solos on this impressive recording. Kahlil Kwame Bell’s percussion adds exotic effects.
Notable tracks (All tracks composed by Harold Arlen):
#2 – Let’s Fall in Love – Lyrics by Leo Robin. This track introduces Ms. Fasano’s versatility and full vocal strength. There’s a rapturous saxophone riff, by Joel Frahm, taking the theme to windy improvisation, and John di Martino’s piano accompaniment is respectful of this vocalist, with true, textured solos.
#9 – This Time the Dream’s On Me – Lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Ms. Fasano’s whispery lead merges with John di Martino’s soothing piano, with her final notes lingering with elegance. Sean Smith plays a deep, earthy bass.
#11 – When the Sun Comes Out – Lyrics by Ted Koebler. Tim Ouimette leads this track in muted melody, adding notable enhancements. Ms. Fasano, meanwhile, sings with clarity and persuasion, driving the soulfulness of the song.
#14 – Come Rain or Come Shine – Lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Piano, John Hart’s guitar, and Tim Horner’s drums form a blanket of musicality beneath Ms. Fasano’s undulating lyrics. This Arlen-Mercer ballad turns bluesy under Ms. Fasano’s attentive interpretation.
