Sometimes, too much of a good thing is a bad thing. A good thing is to present theatrical satirical reviews and skits, à la Bill Maher, “Bush Is Bad”, and The Capitol Steps, with the invasion and occupation of Iraq now four years old. People need to vent, to be in the company of those who are venting, and to see and hear their own thoughts and potential thoughts illustrated and outlined in logical, intelligent fashion. However, when the “F”-word is spoken, sung, posted, and dramatized at least once every 30 seconds, this is too much of what should have been a good thing. The dialogue loses meaning and grinds against the mind. That directorial decision seemed almost a carefully planned, Right-Wing sabotage of a very informative and thought-provoking, political show.

Five Yuppie-looking, well dressed actors, with five overhead projectors and five screens run the audience through 70 minutes of Iraq War history, the story behind the decisions, the facts behind the plans, and the construct to save America from war profiteers. The research in this show is incredibly astute, exact, and credible. The delivery could be so much better without the relentless profanity. One other tasteless moment occurred with an actor dressed as Terry Schiavo’s feeding tube! The poor woman needs to finally rest in peace. However, when an actor dressed as North Korea appeared and re-appeared, seeking “attention”, the show hit its mark.

I was quite impressed with the flow of statistics, on election mishaps, global warming, and political polls, as well as numerous other “stray facts” that flew like fireworks. The actors, rather than morphing into Michael Moore or Cindy Sheehan types, remained in urban office attire, quick-tongued, hip, and “respectable”. Yet, once again, the incessant flow of profanity was an annoying drum-roll that undermined rather than underlined the brilliant, sequential skits. These skits are based on David Rees’ politically laced comic strip and were adapted by Kirk Lynn, one of the show’s five actors. Shawn Sides keeps the momentum fast and furious, and the juggling of hundreds of projection photos and graphs, sometimes in flashing unison, and sometimes as the unfolding of a case, requires detailed direction.

With a little work, this show should be seen often, all around the country, in cities and towns. There is much to be learned and much to be discussed. Rude Mechs has created a “very good thing”, that with some streamlining and mainstreaming, could be a nation-wide hit. Kudos to David Rees for his searing satire.
