(See a Pre-Holiday Photo-Essay at Joseph Patelson Music House).

I recently caught up with Marsha Patelson, the musically impassioned proprietor of Joseph Patelson Music House, at Amarone Ristorante, in the theatre district, Ninth Avenue at 48th Street. Marsha was a high school orchestral and chamber music teacher in the New York City school system for several years. She is also a professional photographer.

At present she freelances as a cellist with orchestras and chamber music ensembles in the NYC area. Marsha teaches guitar and keyboard class, as well as private lessons to other retired teachers. Her 18 year-old son, Michael, recently graduated from La Guardia High School for the Performing Arts and is a gifted, upcoming musician as well.

Marsha's late father-in-law, Joseph Patelson, founded the shop (just opposite the Carnegie Hall stage door.) in 1947. The Music House carries 47,000 plus titles of piano, organ, string, chamber music, string ensemble music, as well as woodwind and brass ensemble music. They also sell method books, in addition to a variety of textbooks and assorted texts on instruments and composers, as well as etudes and studies for all instruments, including voice.

Marsha Patelson's husband, Dan, son of founder, Joseph, took over the shop for the past twenty five years, until his untimely death in 2004. Since her loss of Dan, Marsha has become newly active in all aspects of her fascinating business. In fact, she is now planning, in collaboration with RobertaOnTheArts.com, live Open House music events, including networking and refreshments, for musicians and the Midtown West community. Check Upcoming Events for dates and details.

The Patelson team is helpful and resourceful in locating just the right musical scores for your practice and performance needs. When you visit Patelson Music House, be sure to look up, where you will see original framed photographs of renowned composers, such as Gershwin and Stravinsky.
