Tonight’s program was quite special, as we had six musicians, the five featured artists and one special guest, Kenny Barron, who generously sat in on a couple of songs. This collection of songs exuded a Brazilian genre, with most works by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and one song by the talented bassist, Nilson Matta. These musicians are quite familiar to readers of this magazine, as they have been frequently reviewed in the past couple of years. The audience was enchanted, and a samba rhythm swept through Alex Kostakis’ elegant antique Steinway showroom.
Some of the works below were performed by the entire featured ensemble, and some were showcases, such as Retrato em Branco e Preto, rapturously sung by Maucha Adnet to Helio Alves’ solo piano. The very versatile Harry Allen, as always, produced soaring, surreal music on his tenor sax, and Helio Alves made the Steinway sing. Nilson Matta brought a richness and warmth to the event with his effective performance on bass, and Duduka da Fonseca treated us to a rousing percussive solo. Kenny Barron was a pro, and, without warning, entertained us on the sculptured mahogany Steinway. Maucha Adnet provided the vocal sensuality so inherent in these works, as she learned them directly from Jobim. I was thrilled that she sang in native Portuguese.

Maucha Adnet says, “It was a very nice musical night at the AC Piano Showroom. The
music went smooth and flowing beautifully. To sing with these wonderful
musicians, these very acoustic songs, was a great pleasure. And the fact that
was a benefit to New Orleans made it more special."
