Lisa Feldmann and Gerhard Feldmann of Bösendorfer New York presented, with this magazine, the first evening in a new Salon Jazz series, “All That Jazz”. The featured artists for this debut were John Hicks, playing the sumptuously sounding Bösendorfer, and Elise Wood, on flute and alto flute. This intimate showcase was designed for music aficionados to experience top jazz pianists (in duo, trio, and quartet), who would make the Bösendorfer sing, and sing it did tonight. All the pianos at the New York Bösendorfer showroom are handcrafted in Vienna, where, for more than 175 years, the master piano craftsmen meet the increasing demands for impeccable tone, action, and response. Bösendorfer New York is the first exclusive showroom for Bösendorfer pianos outside of Vienna. President Gerhard Feldmann is an internationally renowned piano and concert technician and a Bösendorfer piano maker.
John Hicks, from St Louis, toured with Albert King, Johnny Griffin, Pharoah Sanders, and Sonny Rollins. He performed for many years with the Betty Carter Trio and played and arranged for the Woody Herman Orchestra. As a bandleader, he recorded extensively. He now tours and performs in international venues. Elise Wood a flautist from Philadelphia, has appeared as a feature soloist and band member with Archie Shepp, Sir Roland Hanna, Clifford Jordan, and David Murray. She was an original member of the NY Jazz Flutet (a flutet that ranges from contra-bass flute to piccolo). Ms. Wood and Mr. Hicks have recorded and performed together for over a decade.
John Hicks, no stranger to the Bösendorfer (Both Birdland and Blue Note jazz clubs have the Bösendorfer as the official onstage piano), played ballads and original compositions with scintillating seamlessness, and the audience could hear the resilience and rapture of this crème de la crème instrument. Elise Wood is an accomplished flautist, whose lyrical and lilting flute enhanced and extended the mood and the moment. In particular, Skylark, one of my favorite ballads, was presented with exceptional elegance. Both Ms. Wood’s Expectations and Mr. Hicks’ After the Morning show versatility and talent in original compositions. At times Ms. Wood led the theme, but she allowed for generous piano solos that filled the showroom with magical music.
The magic was evidently engaging, as many of the Salon Jazz guests then explored the Bösendorfers in the showroom, as one guest after another participated in an impromptu piano jam. One even sang, while some just watched. In addition, the audio system featuring the Bösendorfer Loudspeakers was warmly welcomed in the playing of the Hicks-Wood recording, Beautiful Friendship. Thanks to Gerhard Feldmann at the “bar”, fine Austrian wines flowed throughout the reception, and European cheeses with fruit décor were enthusiastically enjoyed. Lisa Feldmann, with associates Maja, Elizabeth, and Robert, all facilitated conversation, photo opportunities, and rounds of refreshments. This was the quintessential networking event, with jazz aficionados and Bösendorfer fans together in an intimate, inspiring space.
