This CD is a collection of contemporary jazz compositions, including those by Mike Fahn, and they range from smooth to staccato, from bluesy to upbeat. Fahn’s trombone is the perfect accompaniment to his eclectic ensemble of guitar, sax, piano, bass, and drums.
#2 –Will Call – Composed by Jay Anderson. With Fahn on valve trombone, Margitza on tenor sax, and Anderson and Horner on bass and drums, this track is rambunctious, rapid, and raw. The solos are minimal, with blended buoyancy throughout.
#5 –The Burren – Composed/Arranged by Fahn/McSweeney. This is my favorite track, with an overdub of slide trombone, plus generous bass and guitar solos. With Horner’s soft brushes, this smaller ensemble works quite well in soft, sensuous sound.
#7 –On Time – Composed by Jay Anderson. This composition showcases Cardenas on guitar, Fahn on trombone, and Blenzig on synthesizer. It’s another very listenable and smooth track, with nice transitions between featured artists.
#8 –Close Your Eyes – Composed by Bernice Petkere, Arranged by Mary Ann McSweeney. Highlighting Blenzig on piano and Margitza on sax, plus bass and drums and a hint of trombone, this piece works well and complements the previous tracks in similar style. The piano is especially noteworthy, with Blenzig’s persuasive performance.
