This CD is a bluesy blend of piano and bass, an unusual twist for Brian Torff, renowned for his Django Reinhardt musical leadership and bouncy, bass swing. This recording has mood, melody, and moment, with a back and forth sharing of the lead and rhythmic contrasts. There are standards, like In a Sentimental Mood, and original works, like Blues dans l’ascenseur (Torff) and I Don’t Know (Melnotte).
Notable tracks:
#6 –Earth Mother – Composed by Brian Torff. This soulful and slow track has an early bass lead with definitive rhythmic accents. Melnotte joins with the soft, sensitive support of chiming chords.
#7 –Another Great Day – Composed by Florence Melnotte. Ethereal switches to energized, as Melnotte takes the lead with abstract intonations, followed by staccato chords. Torff keeps his bass in low, repetitive tones, a rich backdrop.
#9 –AWA – Composed by Henri Texler. With a bass bow lead, Torff creates edgy, sorrowful sound, eventually backed by Satie-like surrealness on piano. After bass fingering passages, Torff returns to his bow for the fused piano-bass conclusion.
#13 –That Old Feeling – Composed by Lew Brown and Sammy Fain. This is one of my favorite tracks, with improvisational piano effects and mutual performance comfort in the ballad. Melnotte takes a few twists and turns, with Torff joining force mid-track, allowing for Melnotte’s signature solo.
