This is abstract, contemporary jazz, usually best appreciated live, but here brought to life with a lively and lightning quartet on guitar, sax, drums, and organ. Most songs are composed by Minasi, and each seems to have personal meaning to the artist, such as Feels Like Rain in China and For My Father.
#3 –For My Father – Composed by Dom Minasi. With Minasi’s contemplative, solo lead, joined by Bollinger’s brushes and then alto sax, briefly echoing and building the theme, this track has soul. The guitar is in control, but the band, with the fullness of Koehler’s organ, breaks in and almost completes the track.
#4 –Quick Response – Composed by Dom Minasi. A steady eight beat rhythm repeats and is then overwhelmed by Whitecage’s persistent sax. This title piece becomes frenetic and fiery, with Minasi attacking his strings in a momentary blitz, before the repetitive notes re-appear.
#5 –I Who Have Nothing – Composed by Leber/Stoller/Donida. This smooth composition, in a mellow mood, is abstract, but melodic and accessible. By creating a contemporary arrangement, Minasi has stretched the original theme and structure to a mesmerizing meandering of notes.
#8 –When Your Dreams Come True – Composed by Dom Minasi. Led by Minasi, this track sings the blues, with sax and organ interrupting for showcased moments, just to return to the graceful guitar and blended band. This is my favorite track, with a generous helping of ethereal sound and dreamlike dynamics.
