If you can’t get to Rio, here’s a full Brazilian Carnivale all in one CD. With Brazilian Samba in a variety of rhythms and motifs, Amazon River creates a series of moods, melancholy to mesmerizing. Hendrik Meurkens has gathered the who’s who of Brazilian and Latin jazz for this must-own recording, with surprise vocals, eclectic percussion, and Meurkens, himself, on harmonica and vibes, two all too rarely heard instruments.

Notable tracks:

#2 – Amazon River – Composed by Dori Caymmi and Paulo Cesar Pinheiro. With natural jungle sounds, Meurkens on harmonica, Caymmi on vocals and guitar, Castro-Neves on guitar, Alves on Piano, Matta on bass, and Da Fonseca and Duarte on percussion, this title piece draws the listener in with piano or harmonica soaring over the ensemble. This danceable, singable work creates an exotic, emotional effect.

#5 – Ela é Carioca – Composed by A.C. Jobim and Vinicius Moraes. Meurkens doubles on harmonica and vibes, with Castro-Neves on prominent vocals and guitar. Piano, bass, drums, and percussion back this sensual and scintillating Samba.

#8 – Meu Canário Vizinho Azul – Composed by Toninho Horta. Meurkens and Alves seamlessly share this jazz-infused theme, backed by bass and drums. They solo and duet with atonal, mixed with melodic, nuances.

#9 – The Peach – Composed by Hendrik Meurkens. One of the pieces featured at the CD release event, The Peach is a driven Brazilian Samba with harmonica and clarinet (Paquito D’Rivera) leads. Exotic percussion goes wild with fanciful finales.
