Chris Thompson on Solo Trumpet

Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower
August 24, 2005

This is a creatively conceived CD, with danceable (Salsa, Bossa Nova, Hustle, Modern Dance) tracks that could be quite popular in the dance studios. Chris Thompson mixes electronic sound with his versatile trumpet, each track a different tempo and theme.

Notable tracks:

#1 – Shaken and Stirred – Composed by Chris Thompson. This pulsating track, to a Hustle beat, appropriate, also, for Modern Dance, has incredible energy and ingenuity. It’s quite unusual to hear the electronic mix with one solo instrument, which only a seasoned musician/technician could produce.

#3 – Bossa Bayati – Composed by Chris Thompson. With a Latin rhythm, this piece has electronic backup to the soaring horn. It’s a soulful, contemporary composition, with surprising flourishes, both instrumental and electronic.

#6 – Red Morning Rise – Composed by Chris Thompson. This title piece, to a clave, Salsa beat, has a powerful, mood-enhancing effect. I could imagine this sound as a score for film or television, with ultra-fast, video imagery added.

#8 – Double Up – Composed by Chris Thompson. To a decidedly Hustle beat, this piece has just the right electronic percussion in the lead, with muted trumpet as background. This is a very positive, professional concept.
