Tonight Carlo Pagnotta, Founder and Director of Umbria Jazz, addressed the packed, standing room only crowd at the Italian Cultural Instituteís Press Conference to re-introduce the young Saxophone virtuoso, 14 year-old Francesco Cafiso of Italy. He was in town with his father to help promote the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, July 9 - July 18, 2004. He would be appearing in Clubs this week, to make more New Yorkers aware of his unusual talent and to be seen once again by the jazz aficionados who saw him perform to wide acclaim in January, 2004, during the New York Umbria Jazz events.

Also appearing tonight were the renowned saxophonist, Harry Allen, previously reviewed in this journal. Mr. Allen and Mr. Cafiso performed brilliant duets and sax conversations with the ever present backup of James Williams on piano, Joe Cohn on guitar, and Joel Forbes on bass. Mr. Williams had previously appeared with the young Mr. Cafiso at the New York Hilton in January as part of New York Umbria Jazz. Joe Cohn has been reviewed with Mr. Allenís band and can been seen at Birdland with George Gee Big Band.

This congenial combo was visibly in awe of Mr. Cafiso and his astounding performance on a very busy saxophone. The Cultural Institute served wine on a warm night, and Enzo Capua facilitated a lovely, early evening event.
