Tonight’s tribute to Capezio Shoes’ 125th Anniversary, at New York City Center, included no less than twenty-four segments of performances, guest speakers, and media tributes to Capezio shoes and history, with ballet, tap, ballroom, modern, tango, hip hop, Broadway, swing, gymnastic, and more. With no intermission (as a Gala reception was to follow, prepared by Fantasy Fare Catering), it was impossible to take notes. Yet, the gestalt of the event was truly dynamic and enthralling.

The Rockettes danced a tribute to Irving Berlin, choreographed by Julie Branam, and it’s always exciting to see the Rockettes, especially off-season, in non-Holiday costumes. Tommy Tune is still in fine form, and, in red, he wowed his fans. He was tonight’s honoree for the 61st Capezio Dance Award. Mr. Tune narrated Capezio’s media tribute, produced by Ann Marie DeAngelo and JoAnn Young. When Break the Floor appeared, the audience went wild, as Mandy Moore’s choreography was so pulsating. A high point for balletomanes in the house was American Ballet Theatre’s presentation of Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, danced by Misty Copeland and Jared Mathews. Ms. Copeland is a mesmerizing soloist with the Company, while Mr. Mathews, also a soloist, was an attentive partner. “The Cobbler Rap” followed, created by Ann Marie DeAngelo. Tonight, it was all about the shoes.

Fittingly, “The Cobbler Rap”, in two parts, created by Ms. DeAngelo, brought out Dax Valdes with World Cup All Stars, Leandro Silva, Ephrat Asherie, Nicole Graniero, Cartier Williams, Kira Schmidt, Mark Stuart, Jaime Varazin, Marty Beller, Craig Salstein, and Daniel Ulbricht. Ms. Graniero and Mr. Salstein are with Ballet Theatre, and Mr. Ulbricht is with City Ballet. Featured music was “Falling Slowly” by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. “Ghettomade”, created by Mr. Wiggles, was all hip-hop, and “Industrial Rhythm”, with Rock Steady Crew, kicked the show up a notch. “Illuminate” danced “Night Vision”, bringing out seven dancers in a work created by Miral Kotb. It was iridescent and dazzling. “Final Test”, with choreography by Cartier Williams and music by Charlie Clauser, featured Capezio tap shoes, and there was media to enhance the audience’s awareness of the breadth and scope of Capezio’s dance shoe creation.

Desmond Richardson was a guest speaker, and he can still show some moves. New York Song & Dance Company presented “Educate Your Feet”, choreographed by Noah Racey, who danced alongside Jeffrey Denman, followed by Dance Sport Ballroom’s “Burlesque”, choreographed by Diana McDonald and danced by Travis and Jaimee Tuft. The second ballroom piece, also danced with Capezio ballroom shoes, was “PASO-Intention!”, danced by Russ and Katusha Wilder, who were among five choreographers. The Mark Stuart Dance Theatre performed a dynamic and well received “Libertango”, danced and choreographed by Mr. Stuart, whose partner was Jaime Verazin. Piazzolla’s music was arranged and recorded by Cinema Serenade Ensemble. Bob Fosse’s “Pippin”, scored by Stephan Schwartz, another big hit, was danced by the Manson Trio.

The dancing was again taken up a notch with “The Lombard’s Way”, choreographed and danced by Martin and Facundo Lombard, who also composed the music, and then the house went wild with “Rock You”, performed by the Bad Boys of Dance. Videos and projections were by William Cusick and Adrienne Canterna, and choreography was scored to music by Queen and Michael Jackson. MOMIX is always a hit, and no matter how many times I see “Millennium Skiva”, it’s always exciting to see dancers dressed and painted in silver unitards catapulting en air on skis. Tommy Tune re-appeared for his 61st Capezio Award, presented by Anthony Giacoio, of Capezio, and both gentlemen were quite impassioned. Tommy Tune has won nine Tonys as a performer, choreographer, and director. Earlier, Nigel Lithgoe accepted a Capezio Anniversary Award on behalf of Dizzy Feet Foundation, which offers scholarships to talented young dancers. The “Finale/Spinning into Light” was choreographed and danced by Anna and Emily Venizelos, with music by Jim Morgan and with additional dancing by Martine Van Hamel, of Ballet Theatre, and Daniel Ulbricht, of New York City Ballet.

Kudos to all.
