Winning Ice Dancer, Paul Wylie, Choreographer and Artistic Director, Lar Lubovitch, and the very busy Chelsea Piers Sky Rink, was an adventurous, unique event. The ice dance performance took place in Chelsea Piers Sky Rink, with muscular hockey players coming and going, carrying their gear. The Gala after-party, at The Lighthouse, overlooked the twinkling river lights, with an elegant, au courant interior, a must-see expansive space, perfect for tonight’s party, that began with a silent auction, open bar, and heaping tables of hors d’oeuvres.

The eleven piece ice dance performance (which would have been twelve, but Nancy Kerrigan, renowned skater, could not present her solo, due to family illness) began with Douglas Webster’s “Primavera”, set to music by Ludovico. It was performed by the Ice Theatre of New York Ensemble, in black costumes, in full force and in duos, spinning and smoothly gliding in elegant choreography. Felicia Zhang and Taylor Toth next presented the Junior Pairs Short Program, “Duet”, in honor of Will Sears. The lifts were splendid, the purple-black costumes stunning, and these two dancers were well balanced and confident. “La Revolte des Enfants”, choreographed by Alberto Del Saz, to music by Renee Aubry, was performed by Marta Bravin, Michele Forchione, and Marni Halasa. One of my favorites was “Tilt-a-Whirl”, created by Lar Lubovitch with a red costume, to a Philip Glass score. Elisa Angeli and Jiri Prochazka seized the space with long glides and dizzying spins in rapturous imagery.

“In a Nutshell” was choreographed by Rob McBrien, danced to Mozart’s “Clarinet Concerto”, 2nd movement. Kenny Moir pretended he was a beginning skater, courageously falling and walking on his skate’s tips, in humorous camp. The kids in the audience loved this one. “Fever” was another of my favorites, choreographed by Melanie Lambert, to music by Bow Wow Wow. It was performed by Ms. Lambert and Fred Palascak, taken from Torvil and Dean’s “Dancing on Ice”. Mr. Palascak held Ms. Lambert’s skates and spun her wildly in gravity-defying whirls. “Dare Greatly”, another Douglas Webster choreography, was set to a Coldplay score. Alizah Allen, Eve Chalom, and Suzanne McDonald were fastened together by their three chiffon dresses, fascinating costumes by Katherine Patterson McDowell. One long length of chiffon tied the three, as they glided, huddled, and twirled about.

“The Dreame”, choreographed by Jacquelyn Buglisi, had a Greek, majestic motif, with dramatic dancing by Elisa Angeli and Tyrrell Gene, in costumes by Christina A. Giannini. The Franz Liszt score enhanced Ms. Buglisi’s incorporation of Martha Graham’s (Ms. Buglisi was a Graham dancer) gestures of limbs with internalized tension. “Stairway to Heaven” was Paul Wylie’s solo, which he choreographed, as well, performed to a Rodrigo and Gabriela score. He danced on every level, even gliding on one knee, and his en air spins were thrilling, as always. He’s still in great form. “Draughtsman’s Contract” was an ensemble work, performed by Elisa Angeli, Angela Chiang, Colette House, Suzanne McDonald, Melanie Lambert, Fred Palascak, Jiri Prochazka, Aidas Recklys, and Kevin Sidwell. This piece was theatrically designed by Elisa Monte, and it exuded pulse, precision, and partnered dance. Karen Young’s costumes were eye-catching. The Finale brought out all performers for a propulsive tour on the ice and several warm accolades. The reception and Gala dinner followed.
