I caught a couple of sets of Floanna Ankah tonight, with her enchanting trio, at Brasserie Julien on the Upper East Side. Floanne brought her repertoire of Piaf ballads, that she's premiering this fall. She's celebrating the 50th anniversary of Edith Piaf's death with a revival of her most beautiful songs. It happens that I'm a huge Piaf fan, and Floanne, who's from France, sings with a natural, captivating accent. Her range is at once operatic and guttural, powerful and poignant. Floanne brought an accordionist, de rigueur, and a sax player. Rob Curto, on accordion, brought out the essence of Piaf's contrasting melancholy and passion, while Sedric Choukroun added ornamentations and improvisations on sentimental sax.

Brasserie Julien, a comfortable and fashionable French bistro, has a lively Jazz scene, thanks to Co-Owner, Fred Legrand, with an array of artists appearing nightly and for brunch. They also have wine classes, tarot readings, and spaces for private events. I ordered smoked herring and Chardonnay at the Bar, and they blended perfectly. The hostess and staff were warm and sociable, and the guests seemed delighted.
