This CD is a selection of interpretive ballads and original compositions, each with a unique twist, a few surprises, and vivacious vocals. Lauren Hooker brings a top-rate ensemble to this recording, on piano, bass, and percussion, and she gives these artists generous solos and instrumentation to enhance her sometimes lively, sometimes languorous vocals. This is Ms. Hooker’s debut CD, and she’s certainly an artist to watch.

Notable tracks:

#5 – The Other Side of the Sun – Composed by Lauren Hooker. This very bluesy melody showcases Ms. Hooker’s captivating vocals and musical expertise. Allen Farnham, on piano, takes an extended riff with a cascade of tonal exuberance.

#7 – Time and Space – Composed by Lauren Hooker. With a Latin beat, Rufus Reid and Tim Horner open this sultry, smooth composition, generously led by Farnham on piano. Ms. Hooker’s music and lyrics are easy-going and natural, and she matches that intent with introspective vocals.

#9 – Lovebug Jitters – Composed by Fats Waller (Instrumental) and Lauren Hooker (Vocal). Fats Waller’s hot pulsating swing inspires Ms. Hooker to fuse scat-like lyrics to Waller’s original theme. Farnham, Horner, and Reid all have time to demonstrate their skills here.

#13 – Creole Love – Composed by Duke Ellington. Ellington’s opus inspires Ms. Hooker to sing in classically trained vocalise, fusing a mesmerizing motif to this enchanting melody. On a future recording, Ms. Hooker should consider at least a few tracks that highlight this superb, sophisticated style. Reid’s bass solo deepened the mood.
