This CD is a selection of 14 original compositions by Vlada, who, according to his liner notes, moved from a small town in Switzerland to Nashville, Tennessee. The band for this recording is expansive, and much mixing, choral fusion, and sound interplay occur. The combinations of organ themes, energized with saxes, trumpets, guitars, percussion, trombone, and additional electronic music are upbeat and ebullient. Even the more languid tunes, with melancholy lyrics, are a mesmerizing mix of chords and yearning, personalized lyrics. Vlad composes, writes, and sings about his private journeys.
#4 – Miracle – This song, with lyrics alluding to Vlada’s arrival in America, features muted trumpet, drums, bass, guitar, Fender Rhodes, keyboards, Hammond B3, percussion, and background vocals. It’s mellow and moody, with a nice, leisurely theme. The subdued background music never overwhelms the heartfelt lyrics.
#6 – Judge Not – This track ensues with a retro, disco sound, mixing choral, organ, and swinging vocals. The instrumental ensemble showcases drums, bass, guitar, wah guitar, Hammond B3, clavinet, percussion, background vocals, two trumpets, trombone, and tenor and baritone saxes. The effect is orchestral surround sound, in punctuated rhythmics.
#11 – Stay – This track, also in the retro, easy listening, disco mode, is very pleasant and fused, with background chorals added for a love song (“You’re the potter and I’m the clay”). Participating instruments are drums, bass, guitar, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, percussion, and background vocals. The tempo shifts between casual and charged.
#13 – Forever More – With Per-Erik Hallin on solo guitar, added to drums, bass, second guitar, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, percussion, and background vocals, this track includes spiritual and soulful lyrics. The vocal harmonies and solos are especially evocative here, with deep organ chords intertwining with elongated stretching of guitar tones.
