A very lively event was presented tonight, in honor of the New York Innovative Theatre Awards. Lisa Kron, renowned entertainer and playwright, was a hilarious and very warm host for these dynamic ceremonies. Blue Man Group performed twice, each time with very loud electronic effects, and with very serious, blue-faced demeanor. The Awards are given to Off-Off Broadway Companies, those smaller theatre companies with emerging artists and playwrights, and the packed audience was wildly vocal in its approval of the evening's awards and festivities.
Some of tonight's Presenters were Olympia Dukakis, John Bucchino, Rob Ashford, and Edward Albee, who happened to be a huge hit at the age of 80. There was a short onstage ensemble demonstration, by the Boomerang Theatre Company, that illustrated differing personalities and affects for each actor. Excerpts of works by Shakespeare, Tom Stoppard, and Kelly McAllister were performed in seamless sequence. Rochelle Denton and Martin Denton received a special Stewardship Award for The New York Theatre Experience. This mother-son duo was honored with a film tribute as well. This was an informative and worthy event. Mustang Harry's, on Seventh Avenue, between 29th and 30th Streets, hosted the After-Party, attended by much of the audience and recipients.
