“The legendary Grotta Azzurra Ristorante, located on the corner of Broome and Mulberry Streets in one of lower Manhattan’s historic neighborhoods – Little Italy, originally opened more than 100 years ago in 1908. The original restaurant, which was often frequented by the world famous Naples-born tenor Enrico Caruso and his friends, occupied the same space as the newly decorated Enrico Caruso Room. The walls feature framed authentic collectibles, including vintage photos, old acetate music discs and records and caricatures drawn by Caruso himself, all of which have been donated by Cav. Uff. Aldo Mancusi, founder and curator of the Enrico Caruso Museum in Brooklyn.” (LS Communications Press Notes)

Grotta Azzurra presents Opera Nights every Tuesday and Thursday for a nominal cover fee, with scheduled performers on Tuesdays and Open Mic for opera on Thursdays. What a delight it was to dine with opera and cabaret, listening to two of the finest up and coming artists, who tour the globe for solo or company performances. Shana Farr sings for opera and theatrical musicals, as well as cabaret and opera dining. She also designs lovely silver and gold jewelry, found on her website. Shana will present a cabaret show on July 18 at The Players Club, and, on October 17, she will sing at the Mabel Mercer Foundation Cabaret Convention at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Vincent Ricciardi will have a leading role as the Duke in Giuseppe Verdi’s “Rigoletto” with Amici Opera on July 21 in Margate, NJ, and he will sing at the Southington, CT, Italian Festival on July 28. David Shaeffer accompanies the Tuesday opera vocalists on piano, and he’s certainly a master of the genre.

Included in tonight’s repertoire were Vincent’s six solos, “O Sole Mio” (D. Capua), “Parmi Veder” (Verdi), “Be My Love” (Brodszky/Cahn), “La Donna Ѐ Mobile” (Verdi), “A Vuchella” (Tosti), “Nessun Dorma” (Puccini). Shana’s six solos were “O Mio Babbino Caro” (Puccini), “Quando M’en Vo” (Puccini), “Vilia” (Lehar), “I’ll Follow My Secret Heart” (Coward), “My White Knight” (Porter), “I Could Have Danced All Night (Lerner & Lowe). Duets were “You Are Love’ (Kern) and “If I Loved You” (Rodgers & Hammerstein). Every song was enhanced with impassioned gestures and appropriate affect. Ms. Farr sings with clarity and poignancy, with her voice traveling the height of musical reach. Mr. Ricciardi has depth of tonality, and both vocalists sang with natural Italian accents, in the opera selections. Some of the songs were drawn from operas, like La Bohème and Turandot, while the English lyrical tunes were drawn from musicals, like Showboat and The King and I.

You can call 212.975.8775 for current scheduling and reservations. And be sure to look for Enrico Caruso’s original caricatures on the wall of the Caruso Room. Buon Appetito!
