(See a CD Review of Mazzù and Troja’s Music)

The atmosphere at The Metropolitan Room is one of warm, vibrant color, to match the warm, vibrant music that emanates from the unique stage, replete with spotlight shadowing and projections, like an autumn leaf effect to expand the song, Autumn Leaves, included in this late night set. Giancarlo Mazzù and Luciano Troja, from Messina, Italy, have brought their Seven Tales about Standards project to New York, and I was thrilled to meet them, after having reviewed their CD, Volume 1, of this project. Tonight’s concert mainly included songs from the newest CD, of the same name, Volume 2. I enjoyed a glass of Chardonnay, close enough to the grand piano to engage fully with the shifting music and lighting effects.

Mazzù and Troja have engineered a new concept in the performance of standards. As I wrote in my review of their first CD, “Troja and Mazzù draw on the essence of each standard and extend phrases, change key, mix the tempos, and add other unique ornamentations that allow the listener to experience the standard in serendipitous configurations.” On the second CD of this project, Vol. 2, Troja and Mazzù play two different takes on the same song, such as Bye Bye Blackbird and Cheek to Cheek. In tonight’s fascinating duo concert, they offered new interpretations of such standards as Autumn Leaves, East of the Sun, and Softly As In a Morning Sunrise. The sold-out crowd was enchanted, sipping wine and cheese, and giving accolades at the end of each song. Many guests were from Italy, including an Italian professor at NYU and an executive from The Italian Cultural Institute.

Giancarlo Mazzù and Luciano Troja stood at the door of The Metropolitan Room, as people left, to greet them and offer them a complimentary CD of Vol. 2, Seven Tales about Standards. The audience was quite touched at their generosity. You can experience live jazz and cabaret at The Metropolitan Room year-round, by clicking onto www.metropolitanroom.com. The ambiance, with special staging effects, is extraordinary. You can also click here to contact Troja and Mazzù about Seven Tales about Standards, Vols. 1 and 2.
