What a pleasure to arrive at The Farmacy in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen on a gorgeous Saturday, late afternoon, and amidst the baskets and barrels of fresh-picked produce to find a casual band with rarified talent. The Hell’s Kitchen Jazz Gang, co-founded by Michael Sergio and Isil Bagdadi-Sergio (whose stage name is Ishil), was set up with a great sound system at the entry of the main market, which spills onto the edge of the Tenth Avenue sidewalk. Passersby, unable to resist the enchanting vocals and strings of the crème de la crème of popular ballads, stopped for a complimentary glass of wine, red or white, courtesy of Harold, The Farmacy’s Proprietor. Every morning, as the sun rises, Harold and his state of the art white truck head to several New Jersey farms for fresh-picked tomatoes, carrots, corn, zucchini, peas, flowers, and so much more. He even brings back fresh cuts of free-range, no-hormone meat and poultry for his daily customers, who also look for farm produce with no pesticides.

People who are discerning about their food are also discerning about their music, and The Hell’s Kitchen Jazz Gang did not disappoint. All instrumentals are live, and Mark Capon played his guitar with melodic trills, solo thematic variations, and improvisation elegance. Likewise, Jon B. Roche, on bass, created sumptuous earthy solo interludes between vocals and pulsating rhythmic backup. The full list of standards is expansive, but highlights follow. During this serendipitous afternoon event, I was enjoying my white wine, the sun, and my bird’s eye view of the colorful array of fruits and vegetables. Michael Sergio and his wife, Ishil, took turns at the microphone and hand-percussion shaker. You can read more about Michael Sergio and Isil Bagdadi-Sergio here, as they also have a film company and numerous eclectic projects.

Michael’s songs included such favorites as “Alone Together”, “September in the Rain”, “You Don’t Know What Love Is”, “Misty”, “Beyond the Sea”, “I’m Glad There Is You”, “April in Paris”, and “A Foggy Day”. Michael sings with soothing, deeply toned vocals, with single vowels sensuously held for effect. He has boundless talent, as each note is filled with persuasive tonality. Michael is a performer whose seasoned, persona-imbued vocals speak for themselves. Ishil’s songs included such favorites as “A Kiss to Build a Dream On”, “Cheek to Cheek”, “Love Is Just Around the Corner”, “What a Wonderful World”, “Comes Love”, “For Sentimental Reasons”, “Corcovado” (also known as “Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars”), and “Besame Mucho”. The latter two were sung in authentically pronounced, respectively, Portuguese and Spanish. Ishil uses her immensely warm personality, with theatrical gestures, to enhance each song. She, too, sings with stunning musicality.

Saturdays and Sundays, from 4 – 7PM, head over to The Farmacy and buy the freshest, most gorgeous and tasteful fruits and vegetables, just picked that day on family-owned, sustainable farms. Enjoy a glass of wine, and absorb the cool, chic vocals and instrumentals of The Farmacy’s Weekend Jazz. You will be thrilled you are there.
